Electric Utilities & Distribution

Electric Production

The City of Osawatomie's Power Production Department has 17.6MW of emergency generation. The power plant is co-located within the City of Osawatomie’s water production plant. In addition to three Nordberg diesel-fired generators at the power plant, there are two additional substations located on 9th Street and 7th Street, each with three caterpillar diesel-fired generators. Water plant operators and electrical distribution employees operate generators as needed when there is a sustained outage from Evergy.

Electric Distribution

The City of Osawatomie Electric Distribution system contains 30 miles of overhead circuits and six miles of underground circuits. Our distribution system serves 2,053 electric meters, both residential and commercial. The distribution system is currently operating at 2400/4160 and 7200/12470 primary voltage. The City is fed through two 34,500-volt sub-transmission lines; one operating as the normal or primary feed and the other as a backup. The electric distribution crew includes four full-time employees who, besides doing daily maintenance and new line construction, also decorate the town for Christmas including the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree in the downtown corridor.
