Planning & Zoning Commission

Purpose

The Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for reviewing City Code and regulations or policies related to building, development, planning, and zoning. The Planning and Zoning Commission focuses on community development projects and are active participants in the City's comprehensive and strategic plans. The Commission also acts as the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Definition of Planning and Zoning

Planning: “The planning and control of the construction, growth, and development of a town or other urban area” such as major development projects or multi-year master plans, like the Comprehensive or Strategic Plan(s).

Zoning: “The act or process of partitioning a city, town, or borough into zones reserved for different purposes (such as residence or business) [also : the set of ordinances by which such zones are established and regulated]," such as what’s seen inside the City Code.

Description of Committee Duties

The role of the Planning and Zoning Commission shall include:

  • Reviewing City Code and regulations or policies related to community development
  • Active participation in development of City Comprehensive and Strategic Plan(s)
  • Advisory board for development projects or planning projects
  • Acts as Zoning Appeals Board as necessary

Board Vacancies

When a board member vacates their position, or as a member's term expires, the City of Osawatomie will seek to fill the position immediately. Persons interested in serving are required to submit a completed Public Service Application to be considered for appointment. City Staff and/or current Board members may conduct brief interviews with applicants if necessary or desired.
