Oz Commons

Project Overview

The City of Osawatomie, KS received a grant through the MARC Planning Sustainable Places (PSP) Program. The PSP grant is part of the Creating Sustainable Places initiative and the region’s long-range plan Connected 2050. The City of Osawatomie was selected among other regional applicants to further Vibrant, Connected & Green places.

This project marks the largest planning efforts undertaken by the City and community of Osawatomie since the 1990s. This is an exciting time and coming together to plan for the future of the community is critical to success.

The Oz Commons Osawatomie Downtown Redevelopment project will focus on Downtown, connecting key transportation corridors and trails while enhancing the community’s identity and role in the region. This community-driven plan will enlist the help of key stakeholders and the community to create a guided redevelopment plan for the City and elected officials.

Plan Outcomes & Key Messaging

  • Reconnect the town to its past and the Flint Hills Trail State Park. The Flint Hills State Park is the second newest park in Kansas and the seventh longest rails-to-trails conversion in the US.
  • Build an active, sustainable, and renewable plan to create a more walkable community.
  • Incorporate bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure throughout Downtown with a series of historic and scenic trail and sidewalk loops.
  • Implementation of the plan can attract visitors and cyclists and put Osawatomie on the map as a key destination on the Flint Hills Trail.
  • Data analysis and community input will inform design and provide a community-driven plan to guide the City for Osawatomie.

Community Engagement & COVID-19 Procedures

While COVID-19 precautions have loosened, public safety is still a top concern during this planning process. While masks will not be required, they are still recommended for individuals without a COVID-19 vaccination or as an extra precaution. The staff and consultant team will provide masks and hand sanitizer for participants in need and frequently sanitize shared surfaces and objects. Community engagement exercises will be designed to eliminate or limit the amount of physical movement and direct interaction between meeting participants. If you are feeling unwell or believe you may have been exposed, we would still love your participation virtually and through online activities.

These guidelines are subject to change as CDC recommendations, City, County, State, and Federal regulations change.
