Flood Control Levees

Maintenance of the Levees

The flood control levees are maintained by members of the Public Works Department. There are levees on one bank of both the Pottawatomie and Marais Des Cygne rivers and pumping stations to eliminate surface water from retention ponds within the city during high river stages. Gates at openings in the levee may be closed during high water and an emergency operations plan implemented. The City of Osawatomie celebrated the completion of a Levee Certification project in the summer of 2022.

Duties

Routine maintenance responsibilities include mowing and maintenance of flood control levees, ground around storm water retention ponds and large open areas, and inspection and repair of pumping stations. The project is inspected annually by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
