Paving the Way Moves Forward in 2023

City Council Approves 2024 Priority Streets
whats next ptw

As the City of Osawatomie continues to work with engineering consultants on the redesign of 6th Street from Lincoln Avenue to Kelly Avenue, plans for 2023 and 2024 Paving the Way phases continue to grow!

Coming Soon in 2023

Along with 6th Street's total reconstruction planned for 2023, Brown Avenue from 7th Street through 12th Street is also in design phase and is estimated to be nearly 90% complete. Progress is currently on track to open bids for it later this year. Depending on which contractor is awarded the project, construction is slated to begin this fall or early next year.

Other construction planned for 2023 includes:

  • 18th Street from Brown Avenue to Main Street
  • Main Street Terrace from 16th Street to 18th Street
  • Walnut Avenue from 4th Street to 6th Street (including the 4th Street intersection)

These streets have completed designs and were bid out late last year. Construction on them is scheduled to begin as soon as weather permits.

On Deck for 2024

In addition, at the February 9th meeting of Osawatomie City Council, the following streets were approved for replacement in 2024:

  • 4th Street from Parker Avenue to Chestnut Avenue
  • 1st Street from north levee to Main Street
  • 5th Street from City Hall alley to Chestnut Avenue
  • Pacific Avenue from 4th Street to 6th Street
  • Chestnut Avenue from 4th Street to 6th Street

With Council's approval obtained, City staff and our engineering consultants will begin surveying and designing these projects. More information regarding the 2024 priority streets will be made available as those projects develop over the coming months.

Did You Know?

Street replacement projects are planned out and budgeted for at least two years in advance of their estimated construction period. Adding an amenity, like a small park/greenspace along 6th Street, will not cause another street project to be canceled. If a public space like this is identified in the design for 6th Street, we are prepared to explore a variety of grant opportunities or other alternative funding resources to complete/furnish it.

Visit our Paving the Way project homepage for more information, including a map of streets and their proposed replacement/improvement timelines.
