ORIGINAL 2/14/2023 9:39AM | Due to excessive inflow and infiltration caused by precipitation, the City of Osawatomie's wastewater plant has temporarily bypassed treatment via the wet weather holding basin. As such, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for the Marais des Cygnes river south of Osawatomie. There is a potential for elevated levels of contaminants and bacteria in the river. Residents in the area are encouraged to stay out of the Marais des Cygnes river and not allow pets or children to enter the river at this time. Once flow recede and bacteria testing shows secondary contact has been deemed safe, KDHE will rescind the advisory.

It is important to note that this bypass was downstream (flowing away from) the City of Osawatomie's potable water treatment plant, and therefore does not pose a threat to the City of Osawatomie's drinking water supply. Tap water is still safe to drink, cook with, and use as normal.
