[Updated - Rescinded] Stream Advisory Notice

[Now Rescinded] KDHE Issues Stream Advisory for Downstream Residents
STREAM ADVISORY RESCINDED

[Update - June 1, 2023 | 1:50pm] The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a stream advisory for the Marais des Cygnes River near Osawatomie, Kansas, issued on May 31, 2023. Recent rains have elevated the streamflow in the river such that the volume of wastewater bypassed has been dwarfed by the current runoff. While the bypass of wastewater has been corrected, the current runoff in the river presents safety issues for those entering the stream. These concerns include elevated levels of bacteria and high flow velocities. The public is urged to use caution in and around the Marais des Cygnes River and take proper precautions and hygiene to prevent prolonged exposure to river water during these wet conditions. Bacteria levels should decline to safe levels as the river flows recede once the rain has stopped.

At approximately 6:49 am on Wednesday, May 31st, 2023, there was a failure of the ultraviolet disinfection system that is used to disinfect treated wastewater at the Osawatomie, KS wastewater plant. The system was repaired by approximately 8:30 am that same day.  Out of an abundance of caution, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a stream advisory for the Marais des Cygnes river. There is a potential for elevated levels of contaminants and bacteria in the river. Residents are encouraged to stay out of the Marais des Cygnes river and not allow pets or children to enter the river. This bypass was downstream (flowing away from) the City of Osawatomie's potable water treatment plant, and therefore does not pose a threat to the City of Osawatomie's drinking water supply. Tap water is still safe to drink and cook with.

KDHE will rescind the advisory once flow recedes and subsequent bacteria testing indicates secondary (wading) contact has been deemed safe.
