Mill and Overlay Work Announced for 2023

City of Osawatomie Public Works officials have announced that four blocks across the community will receive mill and overlay work next week, including Parker Avenue between 8th Street and 9th Street. These blocks are late additions to the 2023 Paving the Way program, which previously had not indicated mill and overlay options in this calendar year. Beginning next week, the following streets will receive mill and overlay work:

  • 12th Street from Main Street to Pacific Avenue
  • Parker Avenue from 8th Street to 9th Street
  • 6th Street from Carr Avenue to Lincoln Avenue

These segments are identified in yellow on the map below. Because mill and overlay is a resurfacing treatment for eligible roadways and not a full-depth reconstruction, these projects tend to move more quickly and impact to residents should be minimal.

Brown Avenue Work Continues

As indicated above in orange, the full-depth reconstruction work on Brown Avenue from 7th Street to 12th Street is going strong and crews are continuing to pour concrete curbs and gutters, intersection aprons, and driveway approaches. Brown Avenue will start to receive asphalt next week and remains on-schedule for substantial completion later this month. Pre-construction activities, such as utility relocations, began in May 2023 with road construction beginning in July 2023 following the completion of Walnut Avenue. A full-depth reconstruction is much more time- and labor-intensive than a mill and overlay resurfacing treatment. These total rehabilitation projects begin with critical utility relocations and/or utility line replacements, along with stormwater redesign, tree removal and other necessary preparatory work in the City's right-of-way. Once those elements are completed, crews can then begin removing old road bed and construct a new road from the bottom up!

Full Rehabilitation of 6th Street Enters Pre-Construction Period

City officials, alongside engineering consultants and contractors, met Tuesday, November 7th, 2023, for the formal pre-construction meeting regarding the upcoming full-depth reconstruction of 6th Street from Lincoln Avenue to Kelly Avenue. Pre-construction activities for this total reconstruction will kickoff as early as November 27th, 2023, as crews begin to relocate and install new waterlines. More information on this critical project will be available in the coming weeks as plans continue to finalize and officials prepare for full construction in early 2024.
