Fireworks Reminders for Upcoming Holiday Season
Posted on: June 26, 2023 - 4:21pm

It's FIREWORKS season! While the City of Osawatomie permits the sale, staging, and lighting of fireworks within City limits, there are a few rules in place to help ensure a safe and happy holiday celebrating American independence.
Please keep the following in mind while you plan your family's Independence Day celebrations:
- LIGHTING of fireworks is permissible in the City of Osawatomie between the hours of 8:00 am. and 10:00p.m. on June 29th through July 3rd, and 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on July 4th. Please be courteous of your neighbors and pay attention to the clock. Be especially mindful of any veteran neighbors who might not enjoy fireworks season and check-in with them or their families if you're planning a loud celebration.
- For more information on how fireworks may affect veterans, please visit VA.org.
- SELLING of fireworks within the City of Osawatomie between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. commencing June 29th and through July 4th of each year is permissible by any person who has first obtained a valid permit to sell fireworks.
- Fireworks permits are required before sales can commence and must be obtained through approval at City Council. If you don't have a permit yet, this year is not your year. Try again in 2024.
- DO NOT stage/light fireworks upon any public street, alley or avenue or in any park or on any other public property within the City.
- This includes the street in front of your house, the alley behind your house, the sidewalk, or other public areas. If you plan to set off fireworks at your home, a heavy, flat and stable surface is highly recommended to prevent fireworks from tipping over.
- ALWAYS keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish smoldering fireworks, punks, sparklers, and more. Know where your home's fire extinguisher is and make sure it's ready in case of emergency.

Have fun, be safe, and please respect your neighbors and community by cleaning up any trash or debris left behind by your celebration!
