Brown Avenue Reconstruction Enters Next Phase

Intersection, Subgrade Developments
road work update

The City of Osawatomie's "Paving the Way" road rehabilitation project on Brown Avenue from 7th Street to 12th Street is entering the next phase of construction. As part of the neighborhood's planned full-depth reconstruction, the intersection of Brown Avenue and 7th Street will be temporarily closed beginning Wednesday, October 11th, 2023 to allow crews to remove the existing intersection and lay down a new rock base. Weekday morning traffic will be allowed to utilize the intersection whenever it is safe to do so. Our road closure graphic (below) has been updated to reflect this closure. City staff and contractor, Killough Construction, plan for this portion of the intersection's reconstruction to necessitate a closure through the end of the week, or approximately three days.

In addition, the old road surface of Brown Avenue is being removed and new subgrade is being placed. This is being done in sections, which will create very large differences in roadway height from one section to the next. Due to these extreme differences, it is recommended that all traffic continue to treat Brown Avenue as a fully closed street. Residents of Brown should use extreme caution and very slow speeds when driving on the roadway is unavoidable.

A full-depth reconstruction requires the removal and rebuilding of over 18" of roadway from the compacted subgrade level to the surface layer, which means dramatic changes as the old road is removed and the base prepared for new construction.
