Osawatomie's annual Freedom Festival returns to John Brown Memorial Park on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18, 2022!

To celebrate Osawatomie's deeply rooted standing in American history, we welcome the public to attend this FREE event sponsored by the City of Osawatomie and other proud supporters. Featured guests in 2022 include:

  • (Special Thursday Appearance) Lem Sheppard, internationally known blues guitarist, vocalist, and historian, presents a discussion on African-American Musicians in Kansas from 1860 - 1920
  • Jim Peters, KU Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning Director Emeritus, presents a discussion on the Underground Railroad
  • Kerry Altenbernd, renowned historian of John Brown Speaks, presents a first-person narrative of John Brown's life in Bleeding Kansas territory
  • Mary Buster, Great-Great Granddaugther of Florella Adair, will be hosting special tours of the Adair Cabin and leading a discussion on the relationship between John Brown and his half-sister Florella Adair

Enjoy Wild West reenactments and watch history come to life. This year's festival features reenactment performances by:

  • Crooked River Posse
  • Flint Hills Outlaws

Along with scripted scenes set during pre-Civil War America, reenactors will also bring to life the storied Battle of Osawatomie including real cannonfire artillery displays! A weapons demonstration and special opening ceremony are also included for your enjoyment.
