City Awarded KDOT Cost Share Grant

$1.5 Million Toward Street Repair
kdot kelly announcement

On October 21, 2022, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly joined the Kansas Department of Transportation to announce $11 million in funding awarded through the 2022 KDOT Cost Share program. The program provides financial assistance to local entities for construction projects that improve safety, leverage state funds to increase total transportation investment and help both rural and urban areas of the state improve the transportation system. The City of Osawatomie was announced as one of the 14 recipients in the Fall 2022 round, with an award totaling $1.5 million.

These funds are dedicated toward the reconstruction of 6th Street, which is scheduled to begin in Spring or early Summer 2023. Members of City staff are working with our engineering partners on the final design for the project, which is currently estimated to cost between $5.3-$5.4 million in total. A full-depth reconstruction, the project will include the complete replacement of curb, gutter, and storm water systems as well as the relocation of utilities and include a bike lane to accommodate the increase in pedestrian traffic along the corridor. Other major aspects of the 6th Street Reconstruction project include improvements to lighting, pedestrian access, emergency services access and mobility, and integration with the recently announced South Levee Loop bike trail that was awarded as part of KDOT's Transportation Alternatives 2022 cycle.

The 6th Street project is a large piece of our overall Paving the Way street repair plan.
