Upcoming Water Line Repair – Low Pressure Notice

On March 14th, 2022, City utility crews will be removing and replacing a leaking water valve at 6th Street and Pacific Avenue. This particular valve is a branch-off of a major water main for the City and in order to remove the valve quickly and safely, crews must reduce pressure and volume in the major water main. This could cause connecting neighborhoods to have lower than normal water pressure for several hours on March 14th. This potential affected area is indicated below by the red-line boundary.

Crews will began work around 8:00am and do their best to limit the duration of possible lower than normal pressure, but the age of the leaking valve and connecting main may cause additional problems as work unfolds. Crews are prepared to handle any unexpected complications, but please know that such issues might further delay the return of normal water pressure.

Water Line Project – Road Closure

The 400 Block of Pacific Avenue will be CLOSED tomorrow (Thursday) beginning at 6:30am and lasting at least half the day. Utilities crews are finishing a major water line project near Osawatomie Middle School. Residents and businesses on Pacific from 1st to 6th may experience low to no water pressure for the duration of the work.

The school district has been notified of the work and potential impact.

Free Chlorine Burnout 2021

As part of its regular maintenance program, the City is conducting a free chlorine burnout of its water distribution system beginning today (August 16th, 2021) and continuing through September 16th, 2021. Periodically, the use of free chlorine (which is stronger and faster-acting than our regularly used combined chlorine) is necessary to ensure a thorough clean of the entire water system.

During the burnout, customers may notice open fire hydrants in town as we flush the system of any sediments and force the free chlorine through the lines. It is important to note that though there may be some odor or cloudiness in the water, it is harmless and safe to drink and use normally. We recommend letting your taps run until clear if you notice a change.

Customers who use tap water for in-home kidney dialysis should consult their doctor to determine if any changes are necessary in their residual disinfectant neutralization process. Customers using tap water for aquariums should monitor both free and combined chlorine residuals.

February 2021 Energy Crisis Ended

For everyone who has been following along with our energy crisis this week, we have good news. We can breathe again!

Water is still running through the intake facility at the water plant and the pumps are still moving. Our power pool (SPP) has downgraded to an Emergency Energy Alert Level 0 (EEA0), which means we’re in the minimal risk level of their emergency alert system. They have also, however, asked that we and those in our region continue to be conservative with our energy consumption until 10:00pm on February 20th, 2021 due to continuing higher load demands and continuing severe cold weather to ensure grid stability as we reintroduce systems (like school districts, businesses, etc.). If the grid gets overloaded, we start this process all over again!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for tuning in to our updates, taking them seriously, and doing your part to keep our utilities as stable as possible. Many communities in our region were not as lucky, and we are grateful to everyone who was willing to sacrifice a little convenience and comfort to ensure continued safety for their neighbor.

Public Water Supply Notice – HAA and TTHM Violation


City of Osawatomie has Levels of Total Haloacetic Acids above Drinking Water Standards

Our water system recently incurred a protocol violation. Although this was not an emergency, as our customers we wanted to
share with you what happened and what we have done to correct the situation.

What happened?

We are required to monitor your drinking water on a regular basis for specific disinfectants and contaminants, including haloacetic acids. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards.

When disinfection (such as the use of chlorine) is used in the treatment of drinking water, disinfectants combine with organic and inorganic matter present in water to form compounds called disinfection byproducts (DBP). EPA sets standards for controlling the levels of DBP in drinking water, including Haloacetic Acids (HAA) and Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM). Compliance is based on the four-quarter average of sample results for each location where HAA and TTHM samples are collected, called a locational running annual average (LRAA). The HAA standard for any one LRAA is 60 ug/L and the TTHM standard is 80 ug/L. Results for samples we collected on 6/15/2020 shows that our system exceeds the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL) for HAA and for TTHM. For 2nd Quarter of 2020, one of the LRAA where HAA samples are collected was 61 ug/L, and two of the LRAA where TTHM samples are collected was 85 and 84 ug/L.

What does this mean?

This does not represent an immediate risk to the health or safety of your water. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours. However, due to our customer service requirements and an abundance of transparency we are obligated to make you aware.

What should you do?

You do not need to use an alternative water supply, e.g., bottled water. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. Please share this information with all other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

What is being done?

Disinfection is an important and necessary treatment process, to destroy all disease-causing organisms in your drinking water. Staff has begun feeding activated carbon to the receiving water, trapping the organic matter and settling it out before it is allowed to proceed through the treatment and into the disinfection process.
