Election Day Update

Osawatomie residents voted on Tuesday, November 2nd, to approve a special retailers’ sales tax of one-half of 1 percent (0.5 percent) to take effect Jan. 1, 2022, by a count of 361 "yes" votes to 203 "no" votes. The sales tax increase would generate an estimated $125,000 annually to put toward street repairs. This sales tax question was approved for the ballot at the August 26th, 2021, council meeting alongside an increase in mill rate from 27.669 to 44.433. When coupled with the $1,000,000 we receive over the next ten years from the Miami County Sales Tax and an estimated $2,000,000 available in state and federal grants, we are able to generate $8,750,000 dedicated solely to streets over the next ten years.
Funding Critical Street Repair
However, as part of our Paving the Way street repair program, City staff has been continuously updating a street conditions inventory that highlights the anticipated timeline of upcoming street repair, replacement, and maintenance over the next five years instead of ten. We believe we can use "economies of scale" to get twice the amount of work done in half the time, including necessary work to utility lines and connections that underlay several of our streets.
